YAVORIV, Ukraine – During a situational training exercise lane, as part of Rapid Trident 17, multinational military forces integrated assets and capabilities to secure a strategic area of operation Sept. 13, 2017, at the International Peacekeeping and Security Center in Yavoriv, Ukraine.

“What we’re doing today is starting the five-day company STX lanes,” said Capt. Zubair Khan, commander of Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 279th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Oklahoma Army National Guard. “ But specifically today we’re securing a position to allow battalion to set up a mortar firing point.”

“Additionally our mission is to establish a traffic control point to control and isolate the avenue of approach, and we’ve also been tasked to do reconnaissance on a nearby hill to confirm or deny enemy presence,” the company commander added.

This training scenario, in preparation for the field training exercise, will allow each nation’s company commander to focus on the FTX key tasks such as countering improvised explosive device(s), tactical mortar operations, convoy operations and security patrols. This year’s exercise will also validate the third rotation of Ukrainian Soldiers, the 1st Battalion, 95th Airborne Brigade, who is participating in the training under the Joint Multinational Training Group-Ukraine program.

“The training that we’re doing here at JMTG-U is really applicable in any theater and any situation they may deploy their forces in,” said Col. David Jordan commander of the 45th IBCT and the JMTG-U program. “It’s also a chance for the Ukrainian military to both display and tests its military capabilities and their capabilities operating with multinational partners including the United States, NATO member nations and other regional partners.”

Rapid Trident 17 is designed to enhance joint combined interoperability amongst each nation participating in the 15-day exercise. Its secondary focus is to prepare participants to operate successfully in a joint, multinational and integrated environment.

The military forces that are combining standard operating procedures and improving collective tactics techniques and procedures included, Bulgaria, Canada, Estonia, Georgia, Italy, Lithuania, Moldova, Norway, Poland, Romania, Turkey, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

I’ve had the opportunity to work with Canadian, Polish and American Soldiers, said Ukrainian Soldier Ihor Sheremet assigned to the 1st Battalion, 95th Airborne Brigade. So being able to share tactical maneuver procedures and going over different techniques with other Soldiers have been very beneficial. Our mortar team has become more cohesive, which allows us to complete our operations faster.

The 14 nations that are part of the multinational training exercise provide a persistent presence and a robust combat capability; deter regional aggression and signify their commitment to strengthening relationships with strategic Allies and partners by building partner capabilities, capacities and interoperability through a variety of bilateral operations.

“The greatest benefit of participating in this training is that the Ukrainian soldiers want to learn, they’re motivated to train and they’re attempting to re-establish their country and their boundaries,” said Khan. “The most enriching reason for being here is my Soldiers get to train hand-in-hand with other Soldiers that are going to take specifically what they learn and use it for their benefit to make their country better.”
