FORT BUCHANAN, Puerto Rico - To commemorate those who lost their lives during the Sept. 11 attacks, U.S. Army Garrison Fort Buchanan, the 1st Mission Support Command , Puerto Rico National Guard and other federal and local agencies participated in a Remembrance Ceremony on Fort Buchanan Sept. 11 for a moment of reflection and prayer.
Col. Guy Bass, U.S. Army Garrison Fort Buchanan commander, took a moment to welcome Brig. Gen. Dustin Shultz, commanding general for the 1st Mission Support Command (MSC) and guest speaker for the event.
As Puerto Rico recovers from Hurricane Irma, Bass emphasized the importance of knowing that everyone is safe. “In the Army, in a time of crisis, we put a renewed emphasis on accountability to make sure each other is safe,” said Bass. “I know that you are all safe because you are here with us today. This is all about resiliency, and resiliency is why we have this service. We welcomed Brig. Gen. Shultz on day one with Hurricane Irma and now we welcome her here today”.
Shultz reflected on the events of 9/11 and how such a tragedy brought everyone together.
“The way our nation came together in 2001 is a clear example of our potential to conquer even the most devastating actions we can imagine,” said Shultz.
“The world was inspired as police officers, firefighters, emergency technicians and ordinary people did the most unnatural thing; run towards danger, rather than run away from it, to save others,” she continued. “It was their heroic actions that helped save many and showed the terrorists that we will fight for our Country. We are one!”
Shultz also referred to the Soldiers from the 246th and 311th Mortuary Affairs Companies that mobilized and deployed within hours to work at the Pentagon crash site. “Since then, more than 5,000 Soldiers from the U.S. Army Reserve Puerto Rico have been mobilized and deployed in support of the Global War on Terrorism.”
In addition to honoring those who are no longer with us as a result of the events of September 11, the ceremony paid respects to members of the military and all first responders who work every day for the protection of freedom, and provided an opportunity for military and civilian community members to reflect on the tragedies that occurred on that day.
Chaplains from the U.S. Army Reserve, Army National Guard, and U.S. Army Garrison Fort Buchanan, gave their prayers and blessings for the First Responders, Armed Forces and affected Family members during this solemn event.
