The 23d Civil Engineer Squadron hosted a 5k fun run to kickoff National Preparedness Month, Sept. 1, here.

National Preparedness Month is designed to educate and empower not only the base, but also the community on preparing for any disaster.

“The reason we do this is to make sure folks are ready,” said Col. Jennifer Short, 23d Wing commander. “A perfect example is what we’ve all just seen in Houston. Disasters don’t discriminate, and you can be anywhere and have something happen. Make sure that your families are prepared.

“Our goal is to make sure everyone is ready. Disasters don’t plan ahead, but you can.”

Master Sgt. Terri Adams, 23d CES emergency management section chief, explained how people can be more prepared.

“Most people don’t think about the simple things like setting aside important papers, having a kit in their car ready to go with insurance documents that would be valuable after a disaster hits. Having a kit, getting a communication plan, and having that knowledge are some of the biggest things you can do to be prepared.”

Adams went on to illustrate some of the major components a person should have regardless of what disaster may hit them.

“I have a kit in my house, and in my vehicle, so I’m prepared no matter where I go,” said Adams. “The communication plan is a big one because if you’re in a disaster here you need to be able to reach out and let your family know that you’re safe. So that is definitely the biggest step.”

The 23d CES will be hosting various events throughout the month of September for National Preparedness Month. Those interested in more information about the events planned for National Preparedness Month may contact the 23d CES at 229-460-2420.
