SAN DIEGO (NNS) –Naval Base San Diego (NBSD) hosted its first family indoctrination at Murphy Canyon Chapel, Aug. 22.
The family indoctrination called “Welcome to San Diego” is designed to assist and inform military families on the variety of resources that NBSD offers.
About 40 families attended the two-hour evening event that featured several presenters educating families on topics such as base security and chapel services, Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR), Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC), and the Navy Exchange.
“Welcome to San Diego” also included a resource fair from 15 other military and non-profit organizations.
Sailors who attended the event said they were surprised at some of the programs offered at NBSD.
“I’ve been in San Diego for 11 years and I was surprised at the number of things that I learned today,” said Culinary Specialist 1st Class Rachel Galvan, assigned to NBSD Mercer Galley. “For example, I did not know that Sailors can request fitness trainers at the base gym at no cost!”
New arrival Culinary Specialist 2nd Class Jon Mikael Sanchez reported to NBSD last Sunday from Sasebo, Japan said “Welcome to San Diego” is an event that needs to continue for the benefit of all Sailors stationed at NBSD.
“This event is a huge welcome aboard for all Sailors and their families and it gives a warm and fuzzy feeling being new to San Diego,” said Sanchez.
The program was initiated in January by NBSD Commanding Officer Capt. Roy Love to help Sailors and military families adjust and easily transition from a previous duty station to the San Diego area.
“‘Welcome to San Diego’” is an ideal event for military families to learn about the rules and regulations of Naval Base San Diego and the variety of resources offered on and off base,” said Love. “The success of the first family indoctrination proves that this event is not only beneficial but essential to all Sailors and their family members.”
There are currently 57,436 active duty Sailors, Navy reservists, and DoD personnel at NBSD.
Sailors, military families, and DoD civilians who reside in the San Diego area for years said that NBSD’s family indoctrination is---long overdue.
“I wish there was something like this when I first arrived in San Diego with my family a few years ago,” said Lily Calfee, whose husband is currently deployed. “Welcome to San Diego has all the resources in one area in the middle of base housing, which is perfect,” said Calfee.
Sailors like Galvan would like NBSD to continue hosting “Welcome to San Diego” for current and future personnel.
“This family educational event is very helpful and very useful,” said Galvan. “I will definitely spread the word about the family event and share what I’ve learned to current and future Sailors at my command.”
