Col. Robert Ferguson, commander of the 155th Armored Brigade Combat Team, Mississippi Army National Guard, reminisces on his recent time meeting Williams during exercises conducted at the National Training Center, Fort Irwin, California
“When I first met Carlin Williams this past spring he told me immediately that he wanted to go to NTC with the 155th,” said Ferguson. “From day one Carlin drove head first into being a team member in the brigade’s mission command doing any task that any Soldier at any rank might get tasked to do. I don’t think he ever slept.”
“I thought to myself what does General Mohatt feed these Kansas Soldiers,” continued Ferguson. “Carlin’s energy, drive and confidence immediately convinced me that he is the ideal leader to carry on the 2-137th legacy; one who will make his own unique imprint with his own style.”
“Carlin, my charge to you is place your NCOs accordingly and place your faith in them; place families of Soldiers including your own high on every list. Place the mission first and the needs of the Soldiers above your own. If you do that they will follow and shape you into the leader you desire to be and in return you will always have my trust, my support and my stand fast loyalty. I know you will do great things here or where ever the mission may take you.” said Ferguson.
Addressing the Guardsmen, family, friends and distinguished visitors the outgoing commander, Lt. Col. Jason Nelson credited the Soldiers under his command for his success as he addressed them for the last time.
“To the Soldiers of the volunteer battalion you have done everything that I have asked of you with professionalism and enthusiasm,” shared Nelson.
“I did not accomplish all the amazing feats over the last 18 months; you did. Your commitment to the battalion and to the Kansas Army National Guard is second to none and that is why you are the best battalion within the 155th and the Kansas Army National Guard.”
Lt. Col. Carlin G. Williams
Lt. Col. Carlin G. Williams began his military career in 1996 with the Army Reserve as a combat medic. He was commissioned a second lieutenant through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program at Texas Christian University in 2001 as a distinguished military graduate.
Williams’ previous active duty assignments include platoon leader; company executive officer; and battalion adjutant, 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division; commander, Company D, 1st Battalion, 48th Infantry Regiment.
After leaving active duty in 2007 and joining the Kansas Army National Guard, he served as current operations battle captain and operations officer for 35th Infantry Division; operations officer (rear) 2nd Combined Arms Battalion, 137th Infantry Regiment; executive officer of 4-6th Cavalry Kansas Agribusiness Development Team 4; and has served as the Red Team officer in charge, rear detachment commander, and the chief of knowledge management for the 35th Infantry Division.
In his civilian employment, he is a regional vice president for AGFA HealthCare where he manages all Department of Defense and Department of Veterans Affairs contracts.
Williams has deployed twice to Afghanistan and once to Iraq. During the deployment to Iraq, his battalion was awarded the Valorous Unit Award for actions in Fallujah.
Williams attended Texas Christian University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree and holds a master’s in public administration from Webster University. Williams has completed the Infantry Officer Basic Course, Engineer Officer Advanced Course, Intermediate Level Education – Common Core, and the Advanced Operations Course.
Williams’ military awards and decorations include the Bronze Star with two oak leaf clusters, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Army Achievement Medal with one oak leaf cluster, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with two bronze service stars, Iraq Campaign Medal with bronze service star, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal, NATO Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with M Device, Overseas Service Ribbon 4th Award, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, Kansas National Guard Homeland Defense Service Ribbon with M Device, Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Parachutist Badge, and Ranger Tab.
Lt. Col. Jason P. Nelson
Lt. Col. Jason P. Nelson began his military career in 1990 as a M60A3 Patton tank crewman and was later commissioned a second lieutenant through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program at Emporia State University in 1995.
Nelson’s previous assignments include platoon leader, company executive officer, personnel officer, and logistics officer, 1st Battalion, 635th Armor; commander, Company B, 1st Battalion, 635th Armor Regiment; commander, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 635th Armor; operations officer, 1st Battalion, 635th Armor; deputy plans officer, and chief of operations for the 35th Infantry Division. He is currently assigned as the full-time deputy chief of staff for the Kansas Army National Guard. Nelson has deployed twice, once to Kosovo and once to Afghanistan.
Nelson attended Emporia State University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology. He has completed the Air Defense Artillery Officer Basic Course, Armor Officer Captains Career Course, Combined Arms Exercise, Intermediate Level Education – Common Core, and Advanced Operations Course.
