Marines, Sailors and guests of 6th Marine Regiment from all generations celebrated their 100th anniversary with a formal dinner to pay tribute to their history and legacy at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Aug.17, 2017.
The 6th Marine Regiment has made history dating back to the First World War and will continue to create history with the new Marines of 6th Marine Regiment.
“The legacy of 6th Marines is one of fighting the nation’s battles in the most difficult climes and places,” said Chief Warrant Officer 3 James Domorod, the commanding officer of Headquarters Company, 6th Marine Regiment. “From Norway to the trenches of the first World War, anytime there is a place that no one else wants to fight, 6th Marines ends up fighting there.”
Marines across the world, including former members of 6th Marines, and those who were unable to attend, celebrated the 100th anniversary of the 6th Marine Regiment.
“Having General Benjamin Watson, an alumnus of 6th Marines, as the guest speaker was fantastic,” said Domorod. “The Commandant took time out of his schedule to record his message and deliver it to the Marines via video, which says something to how the Commandant feels about the 6th Marine Regiment.”
The Marines also received a message from the regimental commanding officer, Colonel Mathew Reid, and the regimental sergeant major, Sgt. Maj. Darrell Carver. Although they weren’t able to attend, Reid and Carver showed their support from Afghanistan in video form.
“I’ve never felt more camaraderie than I have in the 6th Marine Regiment,” said Sergeant Jonathon Alamia, a Marine from 6th Marine Regiment. “It was great to see everyone, especially the new Marines, and just have that time to break bread among brothers. It was an amazing time.”
The legacy of Marines will always be left behind, only to be looked back upon by the Marines of future generations, Domorod explained. He continued, “The Marines of today show photos and share stories of the Marines of 80 years ago and in 80 years, those Marines will show photos and share stories of today’s Marines.”
The Fighting Sixth has been in many conflicts including Belleau Wood, Tarawa and Okinawa.
“The history that’s being written now is your history,” said Domorod. “When your sons and daughters join the Marine Corps, they’ll be able to look back and say that their dad or mom was part of that.”
Celebrating the past allows Marines to reflect on those who came before them and look forward to the history they will make in the future, just as the Fighting Sixth has done for a century.
