Sgt. Maj. of the Army Daniel A. Dailey visited the 4th Infantry Division and Fort Carson Aug. 17 to celebrate Iron Horse Week.
“First of all, it’s important to be back here at Fort Carson period, because there are some great Soldiers here. There always has and there always will be. It’s a great division, a great installation,” Dailey said.
His morning started with physical readiness training, something that he said is the most important part of a Soldier’s day. The 1st Platoon, Company B, 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 4th Inf. Div., tested his physical fitness by inviting him to be a part of their rigorous training.
The former 4th Inf. Div. command sergeant major described Iron Horse Week with one word, “motivating”.
“It always motivated me when it came to Iron Horse Week. To see the Soldiers come together and build teams. It made Soldiers better, and it brought them together … and they look forward to it,” he said.
Iron Horse Week is a culmination of tradition and camaraderie for the Soldiers and Families of 4th Inf. Div. The “Iron Horse” division has an illustrious history that dates back to 1917 when it was organized as a buildup of forces to propel the U.S. involvement in mechanized warfare during World War I.
As the division continually builds and maintains combat ready expeditionary forces necessary to fight and win in complex environments, the Soldiers and Families received a much needed break from the training schedule for competitive fun and tradition.
“I think it’s what we’re all about – a little bit of competition, teamwork, dedication and it makes the Army strong,” he said.
Honoring the 100-year history of the division also honors the service and sacrifice of the Soldiers who have served. Dailey said this is a testament to their service and sacrifice, which is why Iron Horse Week remains a steadfast tradition.
“My favorite part (of Iron Horse Week) was always the sporting events, going out and watching the Soldiers go out there and give it all they’ve got and the great camaraderie that they had going on,” he added.
“It really encompasses what this division is all about – tradition, Soldiers, Families and teams,” Dailey said.
Dailey spent many years here and deployed from Fort Carson several times. With open arms, Dailey said, he was welcomed back to this community every single time.
“I just want to tell you, it’s great to be back home. For me this is hometown America. This place holds a special place in our heart,” he said.
