The Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy visits Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, July 28, 2017.

The MCPON visited multiple facilities around Camp Lejeune, speaking with the Marines and sailors and congratulating the new chief petty officer selects.

“Anywhere I go, the intent is to see our sailors and Marines, the environments that they operate in, and how we may be able to improve those environments, both in terms of quality of life and war fighting effectiveness, then taking that information to move things forward as a Navy-Marine Corps team,” said Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy Steven S. Giordano.

Giordano began his tour of the base at the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters building and met with the Command Master Chief Jody Gene Fletcher and Command Master Chief Chris Rebana before visiting the Medical Logistics System.

“We would not be able to provide what we do for our nation if not for the other services included in our Navy-Marine Corps team,” said Giordano. “I say Navy-Marine Corps team because we are one team, we are two elements of a triad that includes the Coast Guard, and we would not be effective in that maritime domain was it not for those three elements.”

After a visit to the MEDLOG, the tour stopped at the Field Medical Training Battalion. The purpose was to engage with Marines and sailors to find ways to improve training and maximize readiness. Following the FMTB visit, MCPON spoke with sailors who have been selected for promotion to chief petty officer in the coming months.

Giordano explained being promoted to chief petty officer was one of the proudest moments of his life, and any chief petty officer in the Navy would likely have a similar feeling. He continued by saying that was the moment he realized the Navy would need him to be more than he ever thought he could be.

The last area the MCPON visited was a range where 2nd Light Armored Battalion was conducting mortar training. There, the MCPON spoke with Marines and sailors and observed how training is conducted in a field environment.

“Somebody made a comment to me during this visit that sometimes our sailors and Marines feel like they’re forgotten especially when we deploy them,” said Giordano. “Navy and Marine Corps leadership thinks about every one of our service members’ families every day. Being out here helps reinforce the message: although we may not be out here all the time, we will make every effort to make sure that they are not forgotten.”
