PENSACOLA, Fla. (Aug. 16, 2017) – Navy Medicine Operational Training Center (NMOTC) finished a three-day meeting with top leaders from the command and its detachments at the National Flight Academy on Naval Air Station Pensacola Aug. 16.
The annual meeting is designed to strengthen leadership and teamwork, and plan the command’s focus for the upcoming fiscal year.
Karen Shuttlesworth, NMOTC’s director of Business Operations, planned the meeting under the theme of ‘Appreciative Inquiry.’ Ultimately, the meeting aimed to influence leaders in attendance and focused on affirming past and present strengths while outlining potential for growth.
“We identified all of our current best practices so we can spread them across the organization in an effort to achieve academic excellence,” said Shuttlesworth.
The six specialized detachments under NMOTC often work with staff and leaders at the command’s headquarters throughout the year but don’t often communicate directly with each other. The first day of the meeting saw all of these representatives in the same room, providing them time to express and present their command highlights, concerns and ideas.
“Getting everyone together in the same room showed us we had a lot of common concerns and allowed us to work together as a team to fix problems and find synergy across the detachments,” said Master Chief Hospital Corpsman Darnell Haskins from Naval Expeditionary Medical Training Institute (NEMTI) at Camp Pendleton, California.
The next day, members were split into two groups to participate in a team-building exercise provided by the National Flight Academy. NMOTC leaders took turns in state-of-the-art flight training stations while their colleagues provided them communication and guidance from a separate room.
“I think it brought together leadership by giving each of us a perspective on communication and how valuable it is that we relay accurate information to stay on task to complete the mission,” said Lt. Cmdr. Kenneth Shaw, NMOTC’s director for resources.
The agenda for the final day of the meeting focused on the ‘Appreciative Inquiry’ philosophy and how it can benefit NMOTC in the future.
“These three days have energized me and the entire command,” said Capt. Mark Goto, commanding officer of NMOTC. “My leaders continued to impress me with the great ideas and ways forward they generate together. They will return to their respective detachments all over the country and spread the synergy we’ve created here. The staff at the National Flight Academy provided an outstanding venue and flight training experience that will not soon be forgotten in the teamwork it developed. I am proud of the hard work the headquarters team put in to facilitate this meeting that will inspire the members of my command to even higher achievements in operational medical and survival training. All this will allow that student we train today to save the life of that service member tomorrow, allowing that one person to return to their family that might not have previously.”
NMOTC and its detachments are part of the Navy Medicine team, a global health care network of Navy medical professionals around the world, who provide high-quality health care to more than 1 million eligible beneficiaries. Navy Medicine personnel deploy with Sailors and Marines worldwide, providing critical mission support aboard ships, in the air, under the sea, and on the battlefield.
