Transporting cargo and personnel safely and securely in a timely manner is the mission of the 7th Logistics Readiness Squadron air transportation operations flight.

The 7th LRS air transportation Airmen plan, organize and assist with deployments, humanitarian efforts, exercises and emergencies.

“The air transportation team ensures the timeliness and safety of cargo and personnel traveling by air, land and sea from Dyess,” said Lt. Col. Jerry Ottinger, 7th LRS commander.

Each pallet that is put on an aircraft is inspected and strapped in to assure cargo is secure whether on the ground or in the air.

“We are here to make sure the operations run safely and smoothly,” said Senior Airman Brian Ho, 7th LRS air transportation specialist. “If cargo or personnel need to fly, we will make it happen.”

In order to keep operations safe, air transportation specialists provide one-day pallet building and two-day hazmat specialist training classes. Both classes are required if a unit is tasked to deploy and hazardous materials are part of the shipment.

“Our job is to safely move the wing and keep aircrew out of danger,” said Tech. Sgt. Jose Ortega, 7th LRS air transportation section chief. “We provide expertise on how to load and unload cargo and personnel on any type of aircraft.”

The mission of Dyess is always moving. To support the mission, the 7th LRS has eight air transportation specialists and approximately 90 augmentees that can support and provide 24/7 operations when needed.

“The air transportation team works day and night to ensure the rapid organized transition of Air Force Global Strike Command and Air Mobility Command capabilities from training mode to combat mission execution in Geographic Combatant Commands around the globe,” Ottinger said. “In other words, we move the spear into position so our aviators, munitions and maintenance professionals can get to the business of saving lives and warding off enemies.”
