2nd Marine Logistics Group
MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - The same defense that allowed Combat Logistics Regiment 27, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, to obliterate 2nd Medical Battalion, 2nd MLG, on Sept. 22, 2008, proved triumphant once again.
Combat Logistics Regiment 25, also of 2nd MLG, tried but was unable to resist the defense of undefeated CLR-27 in their 16-0 defeat during their second Marine Corps League football game at the 'O' street field, Oct. 1.
"This was really a story about defense, like the first game," said Capt. Jayson L. Durden, head coach for CLR-27. "Defense was responsible for nine out of the 16 points that were scored."
Some people may wonder what kind of defense could cause such a dramatic effect. The answer: the split 4-4 defense. Basically, the defensive line consists of four defensive linemen and four defensive linebackers. The four linebackers are split up: two inside, two outside, and they rotate which side will rush the offense.
"Wherever the weak side is, we attack," said Cpl. Maurice S. Jones, a linebacker for the team. "It's been working perfectly. No one has scored on us yet."
This is the Philadelphia native's first year playing defense, although he has played the position of quarterback and wide receiver since he was in sixth grade and uses that experience to his advantage.
"Some of them do the same things I did as a wide receiver," Jones explained. "You can tell by their eyes they're intimidated, and you can react and play off of that."
Jones scored a safety during the first quarter of the game, and was also responsible for a turnover that helped score the first touchdown for CLR-27, when CLR-25 lost the ball while attempting a punt. As soon as a player picked up the ball, Jones sacked him, forcing a fumble, recovered by CLR-27, returning it 60 yards to inside the red zone.
This is the first year Durden has had enough linebackers to play a 4-4 defense, after trying for eight years. Cpl. William C. Rogers, a comptroller clerk and linebacker for the team, played the 4-3 defense in high school.
"The difference is you always have a free-roaming linebacker that can play a run or a pass," the Florence, Ala., native explained. "We also have really athletic players that are able to [sprint] and get the ball."
With so much success from the defensive line, the players will have another chance to battle their way closer to the championship, when CLR-27 faces the Installation Personnel Administration Center, who has a split 1-1 record after losing their second game, 28-0 to Camp Johnson.
CLR-27's third game of the season will be head at 6:00 p.m., Oct. 6 at the "O" Street field.
