Members of Malmstrom tested their physical abilities in an Alpha Warrior competition Aug. 9.
The Air Force Alpha Warrior program came to Malmstrom Aug. 8-9 to give Airmen and their family members the opportunity to compete in a timed obstacle course.
“Alpha Warrior is a traveling obstacle course race and it started as a vision that stemmed off of the American Ninja Warrior TV show to make that type of competition accessible to everybody,” said Kevin Klein, Alpha Warrior athlete and American Ninja Warrior veteran.
The Air Force teamed up with Alpha Warrior because it incorporates the four pillars of Comprehensive Airmen Fitness - mental, physical, social and spiritual.
The program emphasizes functional fitness while encouraging Airmen to work out and train in a different way.
“We really want to make fitness fun and less daunting,” said Barclay Stockett, Alpha Warrior athlete and American Ninja Warrior veteran. “While playing on the course you’re getting strong and you’re not even thinking about getting strong you’re just going through these obstacles having the time of your life.”
Day one of the two-day event included Alpha Warrior professional athletes, Klein and Stockett touring the base, meeting Airmen, talking to children at the youth center, signing autographs at multiple meet-and-greet locations, as well as leading an intense physical training session for Airmen.
On day two the Alpha Warrior team assembled a battle rig station that will remain inside the fitness center and familiarized fitness center staff with the new equipment before the competition.
Approximately 200 spectators came to support and cheer for the 41 competitors attempting to complete the obstacles.
Malmstrom’s male winners in order from first to third were: Christopher Thompson, Victor Martinez, and Joel Leveille, for females: Cece Kelsey, Julianne Stewart and Jessica Ortiz-Villa.
The top qualifiers will go on to compete in the regional competition hosted by Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota next month.
