Members from the 179th Airlift Wing along with other soldiers and airmen from all over the state of Ohio participated in the Ohio National Guard’s health care program “GuardCare” on August 5 and 6, 2017, at London High School in London, Ohio.
GuardCare is a program that gives Ohio families access to free healthcare regardless of income or health insurance.
“Today is a great opportunity for the Guard, the local health resources, and the local hospital to come together to do something for the community,” said Maj. Gen. Stephen Markovich, the Commander of the Ohio Air National Guard. “It gives us a chance to be visible, be relevant, and to make people’s lives better.”
In addition to helping the community, GuardCare provides the military an Innovative Readiness Training opportunity. IRT combines careerfield training with community service.
“IRT is a mechanism that we use in the military that provides readiness training to soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, and coast guardsmen,” said Lt. Col. Troy Cramer, the Deputy Medical Group Commander at the 179th AW. “Not only are they getting free training, but it’s very gratifying and the people here are so appreciative.”
Members of the 179th AW embraced the event as a chance to use their medical experience to help others.
“It’s very humbling to serve other people,” said Tech. Sgt. Cashay L. Moorer, an Aerospace Medic at the 179th AW. “I’m majoring in public health right now so being able to bring health care to the people is something I enjoy doing. It’s awesome to be able to do that through the military.”
GuardCare takes place in counties in Ohio that are traditionally medically underserved.
“It’s very eye opening to realize that there are a lot of people who don’t have the luxuries that we take for granted,” said Senior Airman Andrew Pavell, an Aerospace Medic at the 179th AW. “I’m very happy to be part of the Guard because we’re actually able to come help our neighbors, people that live down the street from us.”
GuardCare is an annual event and serves as a training opportunity for the Ohio National Guard to give back to the Ohio community.
