FORWARD OPERATING BASE WARHORSE, Iraq - "Government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth," a famous quote from Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States, that like the nation, has long endured the test of time.

In celebration of America's two hundred and thirty-second birthday 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment Soldiers here at Forward Operating Base Warhorse, took part in a variety of events designed to boost morale as well as pay respect to our great nation, on the fourth of July.

The first event of the day was a five kilometer fun run that traced a route around the perimeter of the FOB.

"We had about 27 participants in the fun run today, which is a great turn out for an event like this," said Redzic Neven, a MWR coordinator for 4th of July events. The fun run is for soldiers of different levels of ability and fitness, Neven went on to say.

The fun run is a great example of how Soldiers can have fun and stay fit at the same time, said Neven.

"The Morale, Welfare and Recreation center has a lot of stuff going on today we're trying to get the Soldiers on Warhorse involved and entertained," said Curtis Battle, an event coordinator for MWR events on the 4th of July.

The Morale, Welfare and Recreation center also offered other events for soldiers to take part in, such as horse shoes and a Texas Hold-em tournament.

"We expect there to be a fairly good amount of soldiers who take advantage of the events we're offering today in celebration of our nation's birthday," said Curtis.

"The events started at zero six this morning and will continue until twenty-three hundred tonight," said Neven.

Another popular event 2nd SCR Soldiers took part in was a three on three basketball tournament held at the Salie Fitness Center.

Soldiers chose teams and competed to see who would be the best three man team on FOB Warhorse.

"The competition is friendly but still, I think all the soldiers want to win," said Battle.

"Our main goal is just to make sure the Soldiers are able to have fun on the 4th of July," said Neven.
