Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point

Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point said goodbye to Sgt. Maj. Benjamin Pangborn and welcomed Sgt. Maj. Paul McElearney during a post and relief ceremony at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C., July 28, 2017.
Pangborn, the sergeant major of MCAS Cherry Point since 2013, relinquished his post to McElearney.
During the ceremony, Pangborn passed the non-commissioned officer sword of office to Col. Todd Ferry, the commanding officer of MCAS Cherry Point, who then passed it to McElearney, signifying the transfer of the sacred trust embodied by senior enlisted leaders from one sergeant major to another.
Prior to his current assignment, McElearney was the sergeant major of Marine Attack Squadron 231, Marine Aircraft Group 14, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing.
“I’ve only been the benefactor of everything that [Pangborn] has accomplished up to this point,” said McElearney. “I only hope that I can carry that torch in the same fashion.”
McElearney said, he looks forward to building a relationship with the surrounding community, and plans on bolstering those relations so the Marines can continue to thrive in the future.
Immediately following the post and relief ceremony, Pangborn’s retirement ceremony commenced honoring his 30 years of faithful service in the U.S. Marine Corps.
“I was up at corporal’s course, and one of the corporals asked me, ‘How have you been successful for 30 years?’” said Pangborn. “I thought for a couple of seconds and it came down to one simple answer, and that’s family; my immediate family, Marine Corps family, and Cherry Point Family.”
