U.S. Marines with Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force - Southern Command held an opening ceremony at Price Barracks in Ladyville, Belize, July 21, to signify the start of a hospital renovation project.

Marine combat engineers, electricians, foremen, and water technicians from the Logistics Combat Element, SPMAGTF-SC, will be working to renovate the Price Barracks hospital in order to better the medical readiness of the Belize Defence Force.

"The purpose of this build is to support the host nation government in providing medical support to their personnel and civilians," said U.S. Marine 1st Lt. Ryan J. Gibbs, the Belize site officer in charge, LCE, SPMAGTF-SC.

Over the course of the next three months, the Marines will renovate the plumbing system, electrical wiring and roofing for an approximately 9,600-square-foot medical facility.

“We are seeking to build rapport and trust with the Belizean community,” said U.S. Marine Master Sgt. Michael S. Polson, the Belize site staff noncommissioned officer in charge, LCE, SPMAGTF-SC. "This is also a great opportunity for the Marines and host nation forces to accomplish team building tasks successfully and efficiently."

The engineers of the SPMAGTF-SC Belize site team have all worked diligently to get this project started.

“Marines and our Corps are rightly proud of our reputations of soldierly virtue,” said U.S. Marine Col. Michael V. Samarov, the commanding officer of SPMAGTF-SC. “While strength and resolution in time of conflict are important to that reputation, so is healing and health in time of peace. Here on Price Barracks both aspects of our reputation are at play”

In addition to the hospital renovation in Belize, the SPMAGTF-SC is also conducting infrastructure improvement projects in Honduras and Guatemala. There are also small detachments of Marines and sailors conducting security cooperation training in several Central American and Caribbean nations. Should the need arise, the Marines of the SPMAGTF are also on standby to assist in humanitarian aid and disaster relief efforts in the region at the request of the host nation governments.

“The day has come for a more ready Defence Force and a place to care for the ill, because those are critical elements of emergency response and an overall stronger Belize,” said Samarov, during the ceremony. "So, as you can see, all aspects of the SPMAGTF mission come together here at Price Barracks, making this beautiful place a true representation of the partnership between our two great nations.”
