CORONADO, Calif. — Weather is a force of nature some people take for granted but for those at Fleet Weather Center San Diego (FWC-SD) it is vital to mission readiness and success in predicting its outcome. Sailors at FWC-SD put their skills and know how to the test during the biennial training activity Talisman Sabre between the US and Australian Navy coalition.

Lt Cmdr Ben Phenis of the Strike Group Oceanography Team at FWC-SD explains why exercises like this are important for his command to be involved in.

“Exercises (like this) help us culturally and professionally in connection with our foreign counterparts," says Phenis. “Since our command fully integrates (with the Australian Navy) we are setting up a combined operational area that allows us to forecast for forward units so they can tactfully adapt during a mission."

Providing a full coverage of weather services varying from afloat naval units to naval aviation, FWC-SD help provide vital information with real time and projected forecasts that help the Navy with mission success that involves risk management & resource protection. Aerographer’s Mate 2nd class Belinda Dunbar explains her job as maritime watch supervisor.

“I am in charge of making sure all of the ships, whether they are merchant ships or our destroyers, cruisers, etc., we are dealing with all of them trying to make sure that if they need area forecast or from us or our guys on site that we are providing that as soon as possible,” says Dunbar.

Reservist and active duty Sailors at FWC-SD combined with the Australian Navy will give 24 hour support readying all units with 48 hour weather forecasts each day during this exercise.

“Exercises are the opportunity to improve our combat skills and to try new things that, if successful, can later be employed in a combat situation,” says Phenis. “At FWC-SD we just adopt what we do everyday to this exercise, providing decision superiority and mission success.”

TS17 happens from late June through to late July 2017.
