Marines and sailors from across the Department of Defense gathered aboard the USS Whidbey Island (LSD-41) to set sail towards Boston, Massachusetts, for Sail Boston 2017, June 12, 2017. The Marines and Sailors are participating in the event in order to showcase the strengths of America’s amphibious fighting force to civilians in Boston.

“This is an outstanding opportunity for the Marines to expose the citizens of Boston to our unique capabilities, history, customs, traditions and significant achievements of our Marines,” said Maj. Michael Waugh, the officer-in-charge of the Marine detachment assigned to attend Sail Boston 2017.

Upon their arrival to Sail Boston on June 15, 2017, the Marines and sailors will provide the public a chance to observe static displays and take part in various events.

Some of the static displays will include a Marine Corps Humvee, a U.S. Navy MH-53E Sea Dragon, and numerous weapons systems. The Marines will also host a three-mile motivational run, participate in a tug-of-war competition, and conduct visits to local schools.

“The events our Marines are supporting will prove to be beneficial not only for the public, but for the Marines themselves,” said Master Sgt. David Williams, the staff noncommissioned officer-in-charge of the Marine detachment assigned to attend Sail Boston 2017. “The public gets to see our warfighting capabilities, while the Marines get a chance to share their personal stories about why they made the commitment to serve.”

As a way to showcase the capabilities, professionalism, and drive that lives within each individual Marine and Sailor. Sail Boston will aid in fostering a strong relationship between those who proudly live in the United States of America and those who proudly serve it.
