Story by Tech. Sgt. Jonathan Hehnly

    386th Air Expeditionary Wing

SOUTHWEST ASIA --This week's Rock Solid Warrior is Staff Sgt. Jason Ervin, the 386th Expeditionary Maintenance Squadron munitions operations NCOIC, deployed from Yokota Air Base, Japan. The Rock Solid Warrior program is a way to recognize and spotlight the Airmen of the 386th Air Expeditionary Wing for their positive impact and commitment to the mission.

What is your current job title and unit?
    Munitions Operations NCOIC - 386 EMXS/MXMW

Which squadron and base are you deployed from?
    374 MXS Yokota AB Japan

Why did you join the Air Force?
I originally joined the Air Force as a way to take care of my family. I was working in the oil fields when my wife and I decided to start a family and a career was part of what we needed. I had always wanted to join the military, originally to be a pilot, so it was an easy choice for me to make in order to take care of my family.

How is your deployed unit/job different from your home unit/job?
I would say the biggest difference is lethal air power. My home station is mostly counter measures and base defense assets. Here we are ensuring our fighters and combat aircraft throughout the AOR have what they need, when they need it, to take the fight to ISIS.

What are some of your professional and personal goals?
Professionally I love what I do at this very moment, so much so that I intend to begin working on my bachelor’s degree in logistics and supply chain management. Personally I’m just looking to be the best dad I can, get in the best shape of my life, take home some new found self-discipline and I’m really hurting to eat some Coco’s when I get back to Japan.

What is your favorite part of your mission here?
My favorite part of my mission here is definitely the impact we bring to the AOR. I’m fairly used to impacting the base, but impacting this base and forward operating bases that are getting real contingency taskings accomplished is a new and very rewarding experience.

What are some of your hobbies?
My main hobbies back home involve PC gaming and building computers when I’m Indoors. Outdoors, I enjoy working out and hiking the biggest mountains I can get to, in whatever country I am in at the time.

What are some of the challenges you face here? How do you overcome them?
The biggest challenge here has been maintaining accountability of items that are in geographically separated locations. All of these assets still need to be inventoried monthly, quarterly and semi-annually. As we are not able to physically account for these assets ourselves, we ensure we have very good relations and open communication with our account custodians so that they may perform, review and sign for the inventories in their locations.
