Marines with 1st, 2nd, and 4th Tank Battalion participated in an annual Tiger competition at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, June 9.
The Tiger competition featured the top performing tank crews from each Marine division, who competed against each other for the title of the best tank crew in the Marine Corps.
Crews conducted drills such as shooting stationary and moving targets from various distances, which emulated enemy vehicles and troops.
The Marines used all weapon systems on their M1A1 Abrams tanks including two M240 light machineguns, a Browning M2 .50-caliber machine gun, and the tanks’ 120mm main cannon.
“I would say this is a huge opportunity for the tank battalions as well as the Marine Corps at large,” said Lt. Col. Lance Langfeldt, the commanding officer of 2nd Tank Battalion. “It allows us to demonstrate the firepower and armor capabilities of the M1A1 Abrams while also showing the proficiency of our tank crews and what they can do out in the field.”
The competition is not only an opportunity for the crews to hone their proficiency with their vehicles, but also an opportunity to showcase the capabilities of the vehicles to non-military personnel.
The 1st Tank Battalion crew was awarded the trophy and title of the top tank crew in the entire Marine Corps.
Marines were given the chance to work and train together with other tank battalions, a chance that is seldom available.
“It’s really great to interact with the other Marines,” said Cpl. Austen Hensley, an armor Marine with 1st Tank Battalion. “It gives us the chance to figure out how they operate and do things differently so we can all benefit and learn from each other.”
