CLINTON, N.C. – Graduates of Class 48 completed the 22-week Tarheel Challenge Academy program and celebrated a life milestone during their graduation ceremony at the Sampson County Agri-Exposition Center here, June 09, 2017.

During the 22-week course, cadets obtain a wide range of skills and obtain certifications that will be used in the next chapter of their life. During this particular class, 88 cadets completed 8,810 hours of community service in various fund raisers and campaigns, and 93% of the class earned a certificate of high school equivalency.

Dr. Shari Herring, director of the Tarheel Challenge Academy at Salemburg stated “We set the cadets up for life long success, our program builds up confidence.”

The Tarheel Challenge Academy has existed for 23 years and is sponsored by the North Carolina National Guard. Its unique quasi-military structure instills at risk teens with life skills while focusing on academics, physical training, self-discipline, teamwork, leadership, team building, work ethics, service to community, respect for others, self-esteem, loyalty and integrity.

Once students finish the 22-week resident course, a 12 month mentoring phase begins. During this phase of the program, graduates are assigned a volunteer mentor whose primary role is to assist the graduate in continuing on the path they started in the residence phase. The mentor also provides advice, companionship, and guidance on seeking employment or enrolling into college.

“We are transforming lives,” said Herring.
