Some leaders are born, but these leaders were trained. Members of the Camp Lejeune community earned their diplomas for the successful completion of Leadership 201, a course hosted by the Workforce Learning Center, June 1.

Leadership 201 is a four-month course built around leadership and professional development in which civilian employees on base partake in four competency groups. The course also includes multiple self-assessments to include the four lenses of leadership, an assessment designed to build an understanding of the participants’ personality.

“It’s an opportunity to develop their leadership skills; to help them grow themselves professionally,” said Lynette Ward an employee training and development specialist with the Workforce Learning Center, Civilian Human Resources. “They gain knowledge from leaders by interviewing and shadowing. They get a chance to network and create global awareness.”

The 46 hours spent in the course allowed for self-assessment and improvement on areas in which they fell a bit short, said Tom Sipe an associate director for Civilian Workforce Planning and Development at Manpower and Reserve Affairs.

“They have gained quite a great deal of insight into their own personal capabilities, and where they are strong and weak and how to deal with those gaps,” said Sipe. “They have learned how to stretch their potential in terms of leadership skills and how it helps them in their job and in their own private life.”

Participants throughout the course worked alongside others who have the same goal of self-improvement.

“I have been able to observe and meet other managers and other division programs that I would never have had the opportunity to,” said Danelle Strang, a personal and professional development advisor with Marine and Family Programs Division and a student in the course. “The things that we learned in those classes we can take back to our office and use with our peers.”

Throughout the course the participants worked together, forming connections that may last beyond the confines of the classroom.

“This leadership class actually became a leadership team,” said Sipe. “They are working together at such a higher level that they actually see the value each of them brings to the unit.”

“If you’re looking to grow yourself and then grow your organization and community, then you’d better jump into it feet first,” said Strang.
