A telecommunications specialist in the 20th CBRNE Command, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, just earned his master’s degree to fulfill a promise he made to his father.
Rodney Mayo donned the traditional cap and gown for graduation from the University of Maryland University College in May. He earned a Master of Science in Information Technology with a specialization in Telecommunications Management.
”I kept a promise I made to my father, Jay Mayo, to complete my education by earning a college degree,” Mayo said. “I believe that having a career in the Army plus a traditional education would assist me making a better future.”
He retired from the Army as a sergeant first class in 2009. “I have 22 years involved with organizational telecommunication systems. My military occupational specialty began as a 31K, radio switchboard operator, and later changed to 31U, Signal Support Systems Specialist. I worked as a communications chief, platoon sergeant, systems administrator, and telecommunications frequency manager along many additional duties throughout my Army career,” he said.
The UMUC classes were a combination of class attendance and on-line distant learning instructions. The telecommunications management specialization is designed to provide the technical knowledge and management skills needed to plan, acquire, operate, and evaluate telecommunication systems. This specialization emphasizes critical management concepts, such as the structure and environment of the telecommunications industry, strategic planning, financial management, and quality improvement.
This degree strengthens work in the entire array of specialties in telecommunications including system security manager, network manager and designer for local and wide area, wired and wireless systems, and federal, state, and local government telecommunication managers and contractors.
A native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Mayo entered the Army in 1986.
“My assignments in the United States include the Army Reserve at Philadelphia. My active duty assignments include Fort Polk, Louisiana; Fort Lewis, Washington; Fort Bliss, Texas; two bases in Georgia (Hunter Army Airfield and Fort Stewart), and Aberdeen Proving Ground.”
As with almost every Soldier, overseas assignments were part of the career. For Mayo, those postings included Panama, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, South Korea and Egypt.
“Even though I learned a lot in the Army, I still need to keep up with the changes in telecommunications. This degree, and the effort I made to earn it, will really help.”
