As part of an ongoing series showcasing Naval Hospital Bremerton Navy Medicine doctors, nurses, hospital corpsmen and support staff and in conjunction with May being Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month recognition…

“As a Navy Nurse Corps officer assigned to Naval Hospital Bremerton (NHB), I am the Internal Medicine Division Officer and Clinic Manager responsible for nursing supervision to the amazing Internal Medicine Clinic Team of 42 personnel, encompassing five highly specialized clinics and a Medical Homeport team in support of safe delivery of care for 2,972 enrolled beneficiaries. We provide world-class service and care to our fellow militaries, dependents, and retirees.”

Madlangbayan has been in the Navy for 16 years and the Oxnard, Calif. native with Republic of the Philippines heritage attended Southern Illinois University in 2002 where he achieved his BS in Healthcare Management and followed that academic achievement by graduating from California State University Northridge and University of Phoenix in 2008 with a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Nursing.

“I joined the military as a hospital corpsman right after my high school graduation in 1996. At 17 and a half years old, all I wanted to do was to travel the world, get free education, and be in the medical field while serving our country. This is how my naval career started.”

The past two years have showcased Madlangbayan’ s ability by being awarded the NHB Junior Officer of the Year 2016 in April, 2017, that followed his recognition as the Junior Officer of the Quarter, First Quarter 2016. He also received the Ambulatory Care Nursing Board Certification from American Nurses Credentialing Center in July, 2016, and earned the Sexual Assault Forensic Medical Examiner Certification in July, 2016. Additionally he led the Internal Medicine Clinic in achieving the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) Level III Recognition in April, 2016, and his supervision led to a successful Joint Commission Survey in March, 2016, with zero discrepancies for the Internal Medicine Clinic.

“Through hard work and dedication to duty, I was commissioned as a Navy Nurse Corps officer in 2008. I started out as a military nurse at Naval Medical Center San Diego assigned in the Med-Surg/Oncology Unit. Since we – my wife and kid – like to travel, we chose U.S. Naval Hospital Naples, Italy, for our next duty station and to be in Europe. Without knowing what it entails, I took the assignment as a Medical Home Port Registered Nurse. This is what led to me become a Medical Home Port Registered Nurse.”

Madlangbayan became interested in a career as a clinic nurse at an early age. He knew he could help those in need.

“Growing up, I always wanted to be a nurse because it is a very rewarding career and you can always make a difference in people’s lives on a daily basis. Being a clinic nurse, it always makes my day when I see my patient smiling and feeling a lot better as they leave the clinic!”

Madlangbayan’ s current job directly impact the Navy Medicine mission by making certain that all enrolled beneficiaries not only have timely access to care, but much more.

“I ensure they are treated as how I would want my family to be treated. As a clinic nurse, I am given the opportunity to sit down and talk to each of our patients to discuss the importance of being proactive instead of reactive when it comes to their health. I believe I am pretty good in encouraging them in getting their blood tests, checkups, and other preventive health screenings that leads to improving the overall health of our community.”

As NHB’s Internal Medicine clinic manager, Madlangbayan continues to optimize clinic productivity while providing the best care to service members and their families. The Internal Medicine Team ensures that service members are fit for duty and mission ready. The clinic also helps facilitate partnerships with other local clinics and hospitals – such as Madigan Army Medical Center - thru the enhanced Multi-Service Markets (eMSM) consortium, creating a more integrated health system around the Puget Sound.

Madlangbayan daily handles overlapping duties in being part of Navy Medicine. He’s a Navy Nurse Corps officer, Internal Medicine Division officer, and clinic manager and the degree of responsibility on a daily basis is high. His secret of handling such importance?

“Being resilient. Having this quality allows me to adapt well in the face of adversity, challenges, and work-related stress. When things get tough, I stay calm and maintain a positive attitude.”

The most rewarding part of his job centers around the staff members he works with in helping to provide patient-centered care to those in need.

“The most gratifying aspect as the clinic division officer is seeing the people I work with and mentor accomplished their dreams and knowing that I made a difference in their lives. I am blessed to be working side by side with the Internal Medicine Family who are truly talented and amazing people.”

When asked to sum up his experience with Navy Medicine in one sentence, Madlangbayan replied, “I would have to say my experience with Navy Medicine has been a life changing one and will forever be grateful for this once in a lifetime opportunity that was given to my family and me.”
