One of the five elevated GAAF samples was drawn from a depth (40-45’) nearing the estimated water table in the Grayling area at 50 feet. Four were identified at shallower depths. This information, along with the estimated direction of groundwater flow led DMVA environmental teams to approach relevant state and local partners to construct an initial target testing area and time schedule for approximately 100 private water wells south of the GAAF to the Ausable River. Results, typically received in 30-45 days, will influence further testing efforts. Water collection will be coordinated by Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, District Health Department #10.
At present, neither PFOS nor PFOA have been documented in any Grayling drinking water wells. However, the Grayling Township Department of Public Works is providing an open municipal water faucet for area residents who would prefer to use municipal water for drinking and cooking until more information is available.
Updates on the issue and background information can be found at Michigan.gov/campgrayling.
