    20th CBRNE Command

The CBRNE Analytical and Remediation Activity (CARA) Aviation Section flew more than 3,000 hours without an incident or accident. CARA’s aviation section flies chemical surety material, recovered chemical warfare material and biological select agents and toxins for mission and investigation purposes.

The movement of these dangerous materials is critical to enable research and development for counter measures designed to protect Soldiers and others in the field. The CARA aviation team also provides support to the Defense Department, and other governmental agencies, in transporting suspect items of evidence needed for various federal investigations.

The aviation section flies two UH-72 Lakota helicopters and one C-12J2 twin-engine turboprop airplane. All CARA pilots are dual-rated and fly both rotary and fixed wing aircraft on a daily basis. Since 2012, the pilots and crews have logged more than 3,000 hours of flight time and successfully completed numerous missions involving extremely hazardous cargo without any incidents. This award-winning aviation team is stationed at Aberdeen Proving Ground (Phillips Army Airfield) and their missions take them across the entire continental United States.

The team includes Jon Gregory, aviation section chief; Donald Taylor, aviation quality assurance specialist; and pilots Gary Miller, Michael Dietz and Benjamin Vehslage, all dual qualified in both airframes. Contributing to the section’s safety record were former pilots Phil Hazard, and Richard Muys.

“Every member of the aviation section is a seasoned professional. They plan and execute these very important flights in support of the Army and other agencies. They earned this award, continue to fly safely every day, and I am most grateful for their ability and teamwork,” said Chris Chesney, CARA director.
