COUPEVILLE, Wash. (NNS) -- Coupeville started the day a little differently on Saturday, May 27. Instead of enjoying the laziness of a Saturday morning, many residents were out in attendance for the annual Coupeville Memorial Day Parade, honoring the men and women who sacrificed their lives serving while in the U.S. military.

Participants of the parade included several World War II veterans, the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps-ORION Squadron, the Coupeville High School Band and the PBY Memorial Foundation for veterans, and featured a remembrance ceremony. Capt. Geoffrey Moore, commanding officer, Naval Air Station Whidbey Island served as guest speaker for the event.

“I want to thank and welcome all the veterans, wounded warriors, active duty members of all services, spouses, families and military supporters here today,” Moore began, emphasizing the honor bestowed on those swearing an oath to serve in the U.S. military.

Moore went on to thank World War II veterans Don Clapsaddle, who served on the aircraft carrier USS Franklin (CV-13), and retired Navy Capt. Pete Snyder.

“We are truly indebted to the sacrifices of every person that has ever served their country by putting on the uniform.” Moore added.

Moore concluded his speech with President Donald Trump’s proclamation to remember Memorial Day, “Memorial Day is our nation’s solemn reminder that freedom is never free. It is a moment of collective reflection on the noble sacrifices of those who gave the last measure of devotion in service of our ideals and our defense of our nation.”

The ceremony ended with much applause from the audience as everyone was reminded of the great cost and sacrifice that Memorial Day represents.
