    Marines with 1st Radio Battalion, I Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters Group have still been able to achieve a perfect 300 score on their PFT despite these changes.

    "The new PFT and CFT standards raise the bar on physical fitness for all Marines," said Maj. Gen. James Lukeman, commanding general, Marine Corps Training and Education Command. "Marines today are stronger, faster and (more fit) than ever and these changes reflect that.”

    1st Lt. Caleb West, Lance Cpl. Matthew Hansen and Lance Cpl. Justine Barkley all scored perfect 300s on the new, modified PFTs.

    “I took this course called Baseline Signals Intelligence Course and the (physical training plans) were pretty difficult,” said Barkley, a signals intelligence collector with Company B. “We would put on a main pack and put (heavy gear) in there and just run three miles, six miles and nine miles. I credit them with preparing me to run a 300 on my PFT.”

    The Marines agreed high intensity interval training has been a contributing factor to their perfect scores on the PFT.

    “My program involves a Monday, Wednesday, Friday interval training workout,” said West, a SIGINT platoon commander with Company B.
    Hansen, a Pashtu linguist with Company A, also agrees interval training is a viable way to achieve a perfect score on the PFT.

    “I don’t really prep for the PFT,” said Hansen, a graduate of Southern Valley high school in Holdrege, NE. “I am really into the (HIIT) lifestyle and it has really benefited me (getting perfect scores on the PFT) and passing the Basic Reconnaissance Course as well.”

    Jessica Kelderhouse, one of Camp Pendleton's High Intensity Tactical Training (HITT) coordinators, conducts daily HITT workouts with Marines.

    According to Mrs. Kelderhouse, the HITT program has dramatically improved the PFT and CFT scores of those Marines who have participated in the program. The HITT program is a comprehensive strength and conditioning program designed to improve combat readiness and overall physical performance, while reducing the rate of injury. The HITT staff, who is certified through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), also conducts HITT Level 1 and Level 2 courses for the Marines throughout the year. By implementing the latest cutting edge training methods and fundamental scientific principles, the HITT program focuses on enhancing athleticism for today's tactical athlete.

    According to West, interval training has consistently shown to be the best way to improve the run time for the PFT.

    “My friends make fun of me all the time for doing interval training workouts,” said Hansen, a native of Holdrege, Nebraska. “But the best part about it is I just kick the crap out of them when it comes to anything physical. I beat my buddy by nineteen seconds during a 3-mile run and he hates it, he absolutely hates that interval training helped me achieve this feat.”
