Equipment arrival improves signal readiness in Europe

BREMERHAVEN, Germany - Equipment for the 86th Expeditionary Signal Battalion stationed out of Fort Bliss, Texas arrived, May 21, at the Bremerhaven Port in support of Exercise Saber Guardian 2017.

This is the first time since 2014 that there will be two ESB units in Europe. The unit’s mission will be to support daily network operations during Exercise Saber Guardian while forces are spread throughout Eastern Europe to help build readiness and implement lessons learned from earlier missions this year.

“This exercise will improve 86th ESB readiness and our readiness as a signal brigade here in Europe as we support Lt. Gen. Hodges’ intent in enabling alliances, assuring our allies and deterring Russian aggression,” said Col. Carl Worthington, Commander, 2nd Signal Brigade.

Saber Guardian 2017 is a multinational military exercise with more than 25,000 military personnel from more than 20 participating nations. The exercise that begins later this summer is part of the European Command’s Joint Exercise Program designed to enhance joint interoperability between Bulgarian, U.S., NATO, Hungarian, and Romanian Allies and other Partnership for Peace allies.

Two young Non-Commissioned Officers from the unit were entrusted with traveling with the cargo, ensuring the safe arrival of nearly 200 pieces of equipment ranging from satellites, tactical vehicles and supplies the unit may need over the summer long exercise.

“I learned a lot about this mission and was honored to be entrusted with the unit’s property,” said Sgt. Solomon Cheapoo, Vehicle Wheeled Mechanic with 86th ESB. “I feel great about supporting Saber Guardian, learning and working with others is what it’s all about.”

As part of the expansion of the rotational U.S. presence, the Army will continue to invest in the training and mission command capabilities throughout the region to assure our NATO allies and deter Russian aggression.

“This is only the beginning of what we are going to see from the 86th ESB,” said Worthington. “They are going to support 21st TSC, 18th MP Brigade, 16th Sustainment Brigade and they are going to sure up the mission of 44th ESB who will be in Romania the whole time.”
