This was the 10th year that Altus Air Force Base celebrated Police Week. The 97th Security Forces Squadron also takes this time to honor those who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

“I feel like it’s important for our defenders to remember that they are more than just Airmen; they are law enforcement too,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Tiffany Nast, 97th SFS resource protection program manager. “You never know what situation you are going to be called into and it can turn ugly in a matter of seconds.”

The week was filled with an abundance of events. Monday started the week out with reveille, retreat and a guarding of the wreath ceremony to honor fallen police officers. The next day the Altus Police Department had a shootout with the local law enforcement agencies. Then on Wednesday was the Gut Check 10 kilometer Ruck March for everyone one base. On Thursday they had multiple events including the Defenders Challenge, Sheepdog Shootout and the Defensive Drivers course. Police Week finished off with the golf tournament for the charity Concerns of Police Survivors on Friday.

A variety of local and non-local agencies participated in the base’s Police Week celebration including the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, APD, Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the 97th SFS and more.

This week gave an opportunity for the defenders on base to connect with the off base law enforcement.

“Police Week is a good time for everyone to enjoy the comradery and the competition between local agencies and the Air Force,” said Trooper Christopher Sherman of the OHP. “Overall the quality and participation of Police Week has been getting better over the years. It’s nice to see senior leaders and Airmen that I have trained out of the work environment.”

Police Week offered the base’s defenders a chance to strengthen their ties with the local police force and strengthen themselves.

“Resiliency is an important factor of this week,” said Nast “It’s about staying mentally and physically capable to accomplish the mission every day.

This week honors the fallen by setting aside a week to train and prepare the base’s and local law enforcers. Allowing the defenders to better manage real world scenarios to protect the lives of others and their own.
