NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) – One Sailor and one civilian assigned to Naval Telecommunications Area Master Station Atlantic (NCTAMS LANT) were awarded the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA) Hampton Roads Military and Civilian Cyber Professional of the Month Award May 17.
The recipients were formally recognized for the award at the AFCEA East/Department of the Navy Chief Information Officer Maritime Summit 2017 held in downtown Norfolk, Va. The summit is an annual conference where government, military, and support contractor personnel gather to share new information about IT-related initiatives, policy and training practices. The three day conference is also an opportunity for AFCEA to celebrate exceptional work by individuals and units in the community.
"We have so many great people at NCTAMS LANT and it is always great to see them recognized for their superior work in front of fellow cyber professionals," said Capt. Matthew Lear, commanding officer of NCTAMS LANT.
Electronics Technician 2nd Class Peter Popiel received the Military Cyber Professional of the Month award for successfully identifying and isolating the fault with a corrupted database within a computer system used for scheduling maintenance and material management.
"I am extremely honored to have received the AFCEA award. I am grateful for the recognition I have received for my work,” said Popiel. “This has been an incredibly humbling experience, and I cannot express my sincere gratitude and appreciation."
The Civilian Cyber Professional of the Month award was given to Ms. Labrina Banks who is being recognized for her efforts to completely revamp the command's Cybersecurity Workforce program to align with the recent promulgation of the Department of the Navy's cyberspace IT and cybersecurity workforce and management and qualification program.
“Being a part of the IT community for so many years on active duty and now continuing as a civilian is a very rewarding experience but to have that work acknowledged is even more fulfilling. I was very excited and grateful," she said.
NCTAMS LANT operates and defends responsive, resilient, and secure computer and telecommunications systems, providing information superiority for global maritime and joint forces. NCTAMS LANT reports operationally to U.S. Fleet Cyber Command/U.S. 10th Fleet.
U.S. Fleet Cyber Command serves as the Navy component command to U.S. Strategic Command and U.S. Cyber Command, and the Navy’s Service Cryptologic Component commander under the National Security Agency/Central Security Service. Fleet Cyber Command also reports directly to the Chief of Naval Operations as an Echelon II command.
U.S. 10th Fleet is the operational arm of Fleet Cyber Command and executes its mission through a task force structure similar to other warfare commanders. In this role, C10F provides operational direction through its Maritime Operations Center located at Fort George Meade Md., executing command and control over assigned forces in support of Navy or joint missions in cyber/networks, information operations, electronic warfare, cryptologic/signals intelligence and space.
