NEW YORK (NRMA) – More than 40 service members from the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard (USCG) will participate in a re-enlistment and promotion ceremony on the plaza at the 9/11 Memorial in Manhattan on Friday, May 26.

Adm. Phil Davidson, Commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Command, will preside over the ceremony.

    Event will include:

    • 1:15 - 1:45 p.m. – USCG Silent Drill Team performance
    • 2 - 2:30 p.m. – Re-enlistment and promotion ceremony

Re-enlistment ceremonies celebrate service members’ renewed commitment to uniformed military service. Re-enlistees agree to additional years of military service. Promotees gain a promotion in rank, which includes increased responsibility and pay and an extended service requirement.

The 9/11 Memorial is a tribute of remembrance and honor to the nearly 3,000 people who died in the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 at the World Trade Center site, near Shanksville, Pa., and at the Pentagon, as well as the six people who died in the World Trade Center bombing in February 1993.

The Memorial’s twin reflecting pools are each nearly an acre in size and feature the largest manmade waterfalls in the North America. The pools sit within the footprints where the Twin Towers once stood. Architect Michael Arad and landscape architect Peter Walker created the Memorial design selected from a global design competition that included more than 5,200 entries from 63 nations.
