NEW YORK - Musician 3rd Class April Griffin, a Frankfort, Ky. Native and a 2007 University of Illinois graduate, serves as a trombonist with Navy Band Northeast.

Griffin has served in the U.S. Navy for 7 years and is a member of the Pops Ensemble and the Ceremonial Ensemble, both divisions of Navy Band Northeast based out of Naval Station Newport in Rhode Island.

“This will be my third Fleet Week New York, and it’s something I look forward to every year,” said Griffin. “The experience is truly humbling as we are often the most visible members of the Navy on the streets and in our performance spaces. The public always thanks us for our service and it’s an honor to receive the appreciation. We know we’re representative of the larger Navy, and love being those ambassadors between the public and our shipmates.”

Pops Ensemble will perform in Central Park and the Ceremonial Ensemble will perform in Central Park and Liberty State Park as part of 2017 Fleet Week New York (FWNY).

“There is nowhere in America that has such a diverse population as New York City,” said Lt. Gregory Fritz, Navy Band Northeast director. “Fleet Week New York serves as an opportunity for Marines, Sailors, and Coast Guardsmen to engage with the citizens of New York and let them know what we do on a daily basis. These interactions put a face to the Navy and make it tangible, that these people are the ones out there preserving our freedom and interests around the world.”

Griffin’s parents, John and Debbie Enos, still reside in Frankfort.

FWNY, now in its 29th year, is the city’s time-honored celebration of the sea services. It is an unparalleled opportunity for the citizens of New York and the surrounding tri-state area to meet Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen, as well as witness firsthand the latest capabilities of today’s maritime services. The weeklong celebration has been held nearly every year since 1984.
