Military police officers around the world put their life on the line every day. During National Police Week, Team Osan honored those men and women who perished while safeguarding others.

“Events like this ensure we never forget those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom,” said Master Sgt. Jeffrey Griffith, 51st Security Forces Squadron standardization and evaluation chief. “We as service members have raised our hand and pledged to give our life for our nation's freedom. This is a reminder of the magnitude of that responsibility.”

At Osan, Police Week kicked off with a ruck march during Peace Officers Memorial Day, May 15. During the trek, more than 100 Team Osan Members honored 28 fallen security forces and Office of Special Investigations personnel by reading and saluting plaques with the hero’s photos and information along the route.

The height of Police Week was a Memorial Retreat Ceremony held on May 19.

“Today, we take a few brief moments to pay respect to our fellow law enforcement officers who have fallen in the line of duty,” said Tech. Sgt. Travis Ferguson, Ceremony host. “We are gathered here to honor the service of our brave police officers from security forces, Air Force Office of Special Investigations, Republic of Korea Air Force Military Police, and the Korean National Police.”

During the solemn service, representatives from each organization read the names of their fallen, which was followed by a 21-gun salute and flag folding presentation.

The 51st SFS also hosted a Warrior Challenge, during which teams of four competed in sprints, litter carries, Humvee pushes and weapons assembly, as well as a Display and Demonstration Day, when they showcased their equipment and military working dogs to the base populace.

According to the official website, National Police Week has been celebrated in the United States since 1962 when President John F. Kennedy designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week the date falls in as National Police Week.
