FORT STEWART, Ga - Soldiers of 6th Squadron, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division and members of the 3rd ID Band represented the division at the 41st Annual Glennville Sweet Onion Festival, in Glennville, Ga., May 13.
The city of Glennville is the largest residential community of Tattnall County and is known for producing more Vidalia sweet onions than any other official Georgia Department of Agriculture county.
Glennville has celebrated the sweet onion festival since 1977 and attracts more than 6,000 people a year.
Chris Roessler, the mayor of Glennville, said the festival is a time to celebrate the past, present and future of Glennville with family and friends.
The event consisted of a one-mile run/ walk, a parade, entertainment, rides and games. In addition, there were arts and crafts stations, a petting zoo, and of course, lots of fried Vidalia sweet onion rings.
“This festival is great because of the fellowship and entertainment,” said Annette Thigpen, a member of Glennville First Baptist Church. “It also brings income into the community, and shows our local wares, hospitality and onions.”
The 3rd Infantry Division has supported the sweet onion festival for the past five years.
Thigpen said she saw the Soldiers marching with the band and they looked great.
“I love that the Soldiers are involved with our festival, and I just want to thank each and every one of them for celebrating with us today,” she said.
“This is my first time experiencing the sweet onion festival, and I am excited to be a part of it,” said Spc. Jaquan Bull, a cavalry scout with 6-8 CAV. “Seeing all these people come together, as one, to celebrate is beautiful.”
Lt. Col. Jay Wisham, the commander of 6-8 CAV, thanked the city of Glennville and the attendees for allowing the 3rd Infantry Division to participate.
Wisham said, “It is always comforting to be stationed at military bases where there are vibrant and welcoming communities that support Soldiers and families. Glenville is certainly one of those communities.”
