CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait – On 26 April 2017, U.S. Army Central held the Cyber Bowl III at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait, in order to promote cyber awareness and security. This year’s theme was “Cyber Hygiene.”
A growing reliance on cloud services creates vulnerabilities for organizations. Tens of thousands of MongoDB (cloud) databases were hijacked and held for ransom in 2016 after users left outdated versions exposed, without authentication (identity confirmation) turned on. According to Symantec Corporation, the United States was the biggest and softest target for these types of vulnerabilities.
As technology advances, the need to secure and manage information becomes even more important and challenging. Securing and managing all this information is a tough job, and to help us understand many of these challenges, cyber operations subject matter experts gathered over the course of three days, from 26 to 28 April 2017, at the Cyber Bowl III at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait.
United States Army Central (USARCENT) facilitated this event by holding educational briefings on topics like social engineering, emerging technology, encryption, cyber damage, host based security systems and many others. In addition to educational briefings, games, and guest speakers, individuals had the opportunity to participate in the cyber range.
“The cyber range was designed for a mix of participants with different cybersecurity skill levels, from expert cybersecurity analysts to less experienced everyday computer users. Participants learn about cybersecurity practices,” said Chief Warrant Officer 2 Hermes Yen, an information assurance analyst with the Regional Cyber Center Southwest Asia (RCC-SWA.)
When asked what he hoped attendees would get from the cyber bowl, Sgt. Ethan Riley, an RCC-SWA information assurance analyst said, “The bottom line would be to inform the general user population of basic and best practices to keep themselves and others protected on the network in a fun and collaborative environment.”
“If we practice good cyber hygiene every day, it becomes a norm and no longer will be an inconvenience, but most importantly, you will be protected and secured,” said Sgt. Riley.
As Brig. Gen. Stephen Hager, Commanding General, 335th Signal Command (T) (P) reminded us in the event’s closing remarks, “there is no patch, no technical solution to poor judgment, or lack of training, so protect yourselves, your family and your friends, because in doing so, your will help defend our nation.”
The event concluded with the announcement of the winning team and the cutting of the cake. RCC-SWA’s team, the Cyber Scorpions, won the championship for a third straight year.
