Military Treatment Facility breaks ground for expansion

Members of the base, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and local government and construction officials participated in a ground breaking ceremony to celebrate the expansion of the 52nd Medical Group Military Treatment Facility here, May 12, 2017.

The additional 54,000 square feet of clinic space will create a more cohesive and collaborative environment for medical practices and personnel, as well as a one-stop-shop for 52nd MDG patients.

“This expansion will be bringing all medical services to one campus here on base,” said Lt. Col. Thomas Lesnick, 52nd Medical Support Squadron commander. “With all the medical services being in the building, it will allow the Medical Group to work as a more unified team, as well as being a more convenient location for beneficiaries across Spangdahlem Air Base.”

The addition to the MTF is slated to be fully functional and open to the base population by summer 2019. Services to be housed in the new building include: Dental, Mental Health, Educational and Developmental Intervention Services, Family Advocacy, Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Treatment, Medical Readiness, Bioenvironmental Engineering, and Education and Training. These practices are currently located in multiple buildings on base.

The ground breaking ceremony created an opportunity to bring together and recognize all the organizations responsible for the MTF expansion, which is part of a series of construction projects aimed at increasing quality of life at Spangdahlem AB.

“Projects like this don’t happen without strong partnerships,” said Col. Alfred Flowers, 52nd MDG commander. “Our local community and host nation partners provide unparalleled friendship and backing for this project and will continue to in future projects.”
