Wearing the proper protective equipment while operating skateboards, scooters and bicycles is the key to safe summer fun on Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow.

“Wearing a helmet and, depending on the circumstances, elbow and knee pads, is required by the base safety order governing the operation of nonmotorized conveyances aboard MCLB Barstow. During nighttime hours a reflective vest is also required,” said Michael Reyes, physical security specialist with the Marine Corps Police Department.

The main concern of police and safety personnel is that when school lets out this summer, there will be an increase of children out on the streets, particularly in the Desert View housing area.

“During the upcoming spring and summer months children will be outside enjoying the weather. Motorists aboard the base must be extra alert for children. Police officers will be patrolling and will be looking for skateboarders, scooter riders and bicyclists and make sure they’re wearing the proper personal protective equipment; at a minimum, a helmet to keep them safe,” Reyes said.

“This applies also to Marines operating bicycles or skateboards on base,” Deputy Chief William Atkinson said. “The proper PPE is important. Most likely the officer will stop the person who isn’t wearing PPE and tell them about the regulation and what is required.”

Repeated incidents of not wearing the proper PPE could result in the responsible Marine or civilian adult appearing before the base magistrate, which could cost them points against their base driving privileges.

“That means if you get enough points it could affect whether you’re allowed to drive on base,” Atkinson explained.

The goal is to keep people safe aboard base. “That’s why we want people to be aware of the safety rules and regulations that are designed to protect them rather than issue citations,” Atkinson said.

The MCLB Barstow Base Order pertaining to PPE is 5100-11H.
