The Attack Wing Staff from the 110th Attack Wing built wheelchairs to be donated to The Military Order of the Purple Heart, May 4, 2017, Battle Creek, Mich. Maj. Rachel Kallenberg, the Executive Officer for the 110th ATKW, organized the event in honor of the Wings celebration of Wingman’s Day 2017.
Kallenberg invited Steve Sweeney from Magnovo Training Group to facilitate the team building exercise and he brought chairs to be put together as a team.
“We were searching for something different than the usual burger burn or bowling trip,” Said
Kallenberg. “This came up as a highly recommended training group that has operated within the community as well as the country.”
The wing planned Wingman’s Day to be at the squadron level for 2017, to personalize the interactions and create a team atmosphere.
“It was definitely different from other Wingman’s Days,” said CMSgt. Jenny Balabuch, Human Resource Advisor of the 110th. “Since it was at a squadron level, I felt as if it was more on an actual team-building. When there are too many people involved you lose the personal part of it. We had fun, yes, but we also accomplished something real.”
Each chair was made for a veteran disabled in the service currently residing in homes in Michigan. As well as built a sense of comradery for the ATKW staff.
“This was a very rewarding activity that allowed the Attack Wing Staff to grow as a team and give back to the community,” said Kallenberg. “Not only did we strengthen our personal and collective resiliency, but we strengthened our ties within the community.”

Balabuch seemingly felt the same way about the activities for Wingman’s Day 2017.

“I took a sense of pride away from yesterday,” said Balabuch. “I was able to give to my fellow veterans in a way I couldn’t before, I was able to help the Purple Heart Association as well as build better relationships with my fellow Airmen.”

The teams accomplished building five sturdy wheelchairs for The Military Order of the Purple Heart, represented by William Roush, Americanism Officer for the Order, who distributed them to the Iron Mountain Veterans home and the Grand Rapids Veterans home.
