Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash. – Civilian and military law enforcement agencies gathered May 3 at Clover Park Technical College in Lakewood, Wash., to honor their fallen comrades at the annual Pierce County Law Enforcement Memorial ceremony.

The memorial also recognized present members of local law enforcement and military police and the service they provide for the community.

“This memorial was a joint effort between the 42nd Military Police Brigade, other military police groups on Joint Base Lewis-McChord, as well as local Pierce County law enforcement,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Brian Flom, 42nd Military Police Brigade. “We’ve come together to recognize anyone who has given their life in the line of duty and commemorate them (as a) community.”

During the ceremony, each agency paid tribute by taking to the stage and reading the names of each of their fallen. Following each name, a bell was rung symbolizing their sacrifice.

“Regardless of what uniform we wear, or where we patrol, we all have the same goal”, said Flom. “And that is to protect the people.”

The keynote speaker, Washington’s Lieutenant Governor Cyrus Habib, spoke about how the memories of these brave individuals should live on.

“It’s an honor to recognize the lives of some of Washington State’s finest,” said Habib. “It’s rare for bravery to be such a huge part of a profession, but for law enforcement it’s everything.”

Habib ended his speech with a reminder that people should not forget the heroes of their community.

“What I would ask everyone here tonight is to inscribe on our hearts a roll call of honor,” said Habib. “To carry the names of these individuals inside each of us and let their good deeds live on through our communities.”
