CAMP SHORABAK, Afghanistan – Several Afghan National Army soldiers with the 215th Corps demonstrated their instructional capabilities to a group of U.S. Marines with Task Force Southwest at Camp Shorabak, Afghanistan, May 3, 2017.
Approximately 15 Marine advisors, as well as ANA trainers, are preparing for an upcoming operational readiness cycle at the Helmand Province Regional Military Training Center. A kandak, or a battalion-sized element, of ANA soldiers is scheduled to receive training on infantry and weapons tactics with assistance from the Marines.
“It’s vital for us, as a training group, to understand what they are teaching the troops in order for us to guide them and advise them,” said Staff Sgt. George Caldwell Jr., a weapons and tactics advisor with TFSW. “It’s what’s going to keep them alive, what’s going to stabilize the region, and ultimately, it’s what’s going to win the war in Afghanistan.”
Although senior ANA soldiers will take the lead on instruction, the Marines will primarily offer assessments with recommendations for sustainment and improvements.
“One of the most important things for us as a group is to have tactical patience, quiet professionalism and always keep in mind that what we do day-to-day, hour-to-hour or minute-to-minute, can ultimately shape the battlefield and the future of Afghanistan,” said Caldwell.
Task Force Southwest is comprised of approximately 300 Marines and Sailors, whose mission is to train, advise and assist the ANA 215th Corps and 505th Zone National Police to enhance security and stability throughout Helmand Province.
