Headquarters Battalion triumphed over the Marine Corps Communication-Electronics School in an intramural soccer game at Felix Field, here, May 1, 2017.
Marine Corps Community Services, in partnership with Semper Fit, hosts an intramural soccer league for units aboard the installation. This partnering affords active-duty service members and their family members who are 18 and older, as well as civilian and contract employees aboard the base the opportunity to compete in unit-level athletic competitions seasonally.
MCCES came out strong in the first half, scoring the first goal, but HQBN quickly equalized the standings before the end of the first half. Going into the second half, HQBN flipped the switch and gave a dominating performance scoring two more goals to end the game at 3-1.
“We give the Marines and their families an opportunity to get away from the stresses of their jobs through our Intramural Sports program,” said Tommy Burke, sports specialist, Marine Corps Community Services.
Burke said the goal of the soccer program is for everyone to get together with people from their units and build camaraderie while having fun.
“It’s an awesome experience to be able to play with and against many of the different units across the base,” said Miguel Torres, midfielder, Headquarters Battalion team. “I grew up playing soccer, so this lets me get myself back into a sport I love while getting in a good workout.”
