The Schriever Airman and Family Readiness Center and Air Force Aid Society have teamed up to offer a real estate broker training grant to five Schriever spouses.
“This grant program seeks to address the employment challenges Air Force spouses face every time they move,” said Heidi Goodbar, AFRC transition assistance manager.
The grant, worth nearly $800, will provide spouses with a portable career option.
“The real estate market is currently thriving in the Colorado Springs and surrounding areas,” Goodbar said. “A career in the real estate business can be a viable option for those interested in the industry and in terms of potential growth and profitability.”
Kaplan College will provide the training, which is approved and regulated by the Colorado Department of Higher Education, Private Occupational School Board. The curriculum is approved by the Colorado Real Estate Commission.
“The training is online and self-paced,” Goodbar said. “Spouses have six months to complete the course. Once the training is completed, spouses will be well prepared to take the state licensing exam.”
According to Elizabeth Archuleta, the grant is an opportunity for spouses to find fulfillment in a professional career.
“This is a chance for you to take control of your life and not be bound with menial jobs,” Archuleta said. “It can be very hard for spouses, especially young spouses, to maintain a meaningful job since the military is so transient. This helps spouses have stabilized career progression.”
While many Airmen may associate the AFAS with an emergency agency, the spouse grant program may not be as well-known. Goodbar said spreading the word is key to the program’s success.
“Typically the Air Force Aid Society provides emergency financial assistance to military members and their families in times of need,” she said. “However, they also have a variety of community enhancement programs, which include the spouse grant program. We highly encourage spouses to take advantage of these offerings.
While the AFAS routinely offers spouse education grants through the A&FRC, this is the first time they have offered a real estate broker training grant.
“We are curious to see the interest level,” Goodbar said. “This is an absolutely amazing opportunity. It’s free money. If anyone has even the slightest interest in real estate, I say explore it. A career like this means you don’t have to settle for just any job you can get when you move to a new base.”
Spouses interested in applying for the grant, must contact the AFRC and apply by May 31. To be eligible, the spouse must be married to an active duty Air Force member stationed at Schriever Air Force Base. The five selectees will be notified of selection for the grant in June.
