CAMP SHORAB, Afghanistan – The U.S. Marine Corps unit Task Force Southwest assumed command of an advisory mission in Helmand Province, Afghanistan from the U.S. Army unit Task Force Forge during a Transfer of Authority ceremony at Camp Shorab, April 29, 2017.
Task Force Southwest is comprised of approximately 300 Marines and Sailors, and will aid in NATO’s Resolute Support mission of training, advising and assisting the Afghan National Army 215th Corps and 505th Zone National Police.
“I’m extremely pleased to be handing the mission to General Turner and the men and women of Task Force Southwest,” said Brig. Gen. Douglas A. Sims, the commanding general of Task Force Forge. “I know they are the right unit with the right training and experience to carry the ball further down the field.”
The Marine Corps’ combat role in Afghanistan ended in late 2014. This group of Marines is the largest to return since 2014 and their support to the 215th Corps and 505th Zone National Police is critical to the continued strengthening of security and stability in the region.
The Marines concluded the ceremony by raising the very same American flag flown by Marines in Afghanistan who were here in 2014.
“The progress that we’ve seen here in the last few months… has really built a lot of synergy in the Afghan forces here in Helmand. I think they’re well postured to defend the people of Afghanistan moving forward,” said Brig. Gen. Roger Turner, the commanding general of Task Force Southwest.
“We are really pleased to work with our partners in the 215th Corps and the 505th Zone,” said Turner. “We’re excited to be back in Helmand [and] we’re excited to assume this mission.”
