Marines with 2nd Assault Amphibian Battalion participated in a certification exercise at Camp Lejeune, N.C., April 24-27, 2017.
The Marines conducted various drills such as beach landings, defensive operations, and night operations to ensure they were ready for their upcoming deployment with 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit.
“We are out here learning how to clear different environments with our Amphibious Assault Vehicles,” said Sgt. Ronald Canales, a section leader with the battalion. “We are also learning how to come in and out of different types of terrain, as well as making it safe for the infantry Marines that need to embark or disembark from our vehicles.”
The training allows Marines to perform tasks generally conducted while deployed, which helps keep them in in combat mindset and avoids complacency.
“We are basically out here to prove ourselves,” said LCpl. Hunter Kraemer, a rear crewman with 2nd AAB. “It’s a final test for our unit to show that we are capable to deploy on this MEU, and be ready for whatever the Marine Corps needs us to do.”
Being a newer platoon, the CERTEX served a critical role in strengthening the unit’s cohesion. Learning to work together creates confidence in their ability to overcome any obstacles they may face in the future.
“This training will most definitely help junior Marines with cohesion,” said Kraemer. “Unit cohesion is the strongest thing that we are learning and will continue to learn.”
