MARINE CORPS AIR STATION YUMA, Ariz. (April 26, 2017) – “Gather the Marines in the shop,” ordered Staff Sgt. Edgar Martinez, the operations chief assigned to Marine Wing Support Squadron (MWSS) 371 utilities hangar at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Cannon Air Defense Complex (CADC). “The Chaplain of the Marine Corps is on deck!”

In a matter of seconds, word spread like wildfire. By the time the 19th Chaplain of the Marine Corps, U.S. Navy Rear Adm. Brent Scott reached the door, a platoon of Marines was prepared to see and hear what the chaplain was going to say.

As part of a week-long tour, Rear Adm. Scott visited MCAS Yuma, Wednesday, to observe Marines and speak with them about their spiritual wellness.

The Marines from MWSS-371 gave the chaplain their undivided attention as he spoke to them. Cpl. Oscar Quiroga, a Basic Utility Marine, was thrilled that he got to meet the Chaplain of the Marine Corps.

“I thought it was amazing to see the Chaplain of the Marine Corps and that he actually wanted to come down and speak to us,” said Cpl. Quiroga.

During his visit, Rear Adm. Scott spoke to Command and Information System Marines assigned to CADC and utility Marines with MWSS-371. Among the group, were several Marines from other stations partaking in the Weapons and Tactics Instructors Course (WTI). In 1992 Rear Adm. Scott was assigned to MCAS Yuma, with the Third Marine Aircraft Wing and spent six iterations of WTI, a 7-week course that is conducted semiannually aboard MCAS Yuma, in the field with his Marines.

“I liked reengaging with Marines, after having done several WTI’s,” said Rear Adm. Scott.

The chaplain urged Marines to guard their hearts, their morals and the values they hold dear, because that is what makes them Marines. Rear Adm. Scott strives to get the Marines to understand their character matters above all else.

“I want to encourage Marines to stand strong and protect those parts of their lives,” said Rear Adm. Scott. “It’s one thing to be physically capable of doing your job as a Marine; it’s another to have your heart prepared to do what the nation may call you to do at any moment.”
