Navy Medicine East is recognizing Hospital Corpsman 2nd Gregory Deshields, assigned to Naval Health Clinic Patuxent River, as part of its Good Catch Recognition Award Program that’s aimed to celebrate those individuals that step up, speak up and take action to ensure the best health outcome for patients being cared for across Navy Medicine East’s region.
Regardless if it’s civilian or military health care, practicing medicine–by its very nature–comes with risk. That’s why Navy Medicine East’s high-reliability team’s ongoing journey consists of improving its patient safety and quality of care and enhancing both the patient and staff experience. The good catch award is one of the many ways NME is encouraging this culture of safety.
“Our mission is to ensure our Navy and Marine Corps family is healthy, ready and on the job,” said Rear Adm. Anne M. Swap, commander, Navy Medicine East. “This means delivering the safest quality of care to those entrusted to us.”
While preparing a routine radiological exam prior to transfer to another facility, Deshields discovered an object appearing to be an anomaly in a patient’s image. Following radiology processes, Deshields carefully reviewed the patient’s exam and immediately contacted the patient’s provider, informing the doctor of his finding.
During the review, the provider confirmed that it was shrapnel and that it required immediate attention. The patient was referred to orthopedics for evaluation and removal of the shrapnel.
With attention to detail and by following established processes, Deshields prevented a potentially harmful patient event. NME strives for a patient safety culture, and this was shown through this his actions.
NME’s high-reliability team oversees several projects from military treatment facilities across almost 100 facilities in the eastern hemisphere, from leadership engagements to robust process improvements–including the Good Catch Recognition Award Program.
Each month Navy Medicine East recognizes a good catch during the NME Quality Council Collaborative. Winners are collected throughout the year and the top three are submitted to the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery Office of the Chief Medical Officer for the annual Surgeon General’s Good Catch Recognition Award.
