KLEBER KASERNE, Germany – Soldiers from Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 39th Transportation Battalion, conducted a convoy from Kaiserslautern, Germany to Zagan, Poland, March 17 – 18, to conduct a field training exercise (FTX) and to conduct transfer of authority with the 330th Transportation Battalion, based out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

The convoy tested Soldier’s ability to conduct convoy operations, re-fuel vehicles, maintain communications, and safely maneuver tactical vehicles over long distances in various environments.
“This is the first time we have been able to cover this much ground in a convoy and have no vehicle issues,” said Staff Sgt. Charles Falter, an electronic warfare specialist. “The Soldiers worked hard to make sure we were ready to accomplish our goals during this mission.”

Soldiers performed tactical maneuvers in order to construct a tactical operations center (TOC) upon arriving to Zagan, and to demonstrate their ability to be an effective expeditionary unit in an austere environment.

The detachment Soldiers proved efficient in establishing perimeter defenses, erecting sleep tents, establishing heating sources in their area of operations, and resourcing network connections for the TOC.

“I was surprised with how quickly we were able to set up a functional TOC and sleeping quarters,” said Spc. Elizabeth Myers, a human resources specialist. “After seeing what we can do, I have the confidence in my unit to know we would be able to function in the middle of nowhere and complete our mission.”

Some of the mission essential tasks completed during the FTX included proper donning of the Chemical, Biological, Radiological, or Nuclear Joint Service Lightweight Integrated Suit Technology / Mission Oriented Protective Posture gear at different levels, scouting and choosing observation post locations, writing and briefing an operations order, identifying and reporting improvised explosive device locations, mortuary affairs training, equal opportunity training, master resilience training, and sexual harassment/assault response and prevention training.

The 39th Transportation Battalion staff officers-in-charge and non-commissioned officers-in-charge actively engaged with their 330th Transportation Battalion counterparts in order to facilitate a smooth transition during the relief in place-transfer of authority (RIP-TOA), by teaching, coaching, and mentoring them on their respective responsibilities with regard to movement control in the Atlantic Resolve-North area of operation over the next nine months.

The unit successfully returned to Kaiserslautern, Germany with no injuries, maintenance issues, or damage to property, March 27. Soldiers traversed more than 3,500 kilometers during this field training exercise and RIP-TOA.
