It’s better to have something and not need it, than to need something and not have it. This week’s PrepareAthon! focus: making a plan for emergencies.
All disasters are different and while you may not be able to plan for every single one, you can prepare for things that tend to go wrong.
Keep all your family’s most important documents, like birth certificates, passports and social security cards in a safe place in case you need to evacuate your home.
Have supplies for a few days in case leaving your home isn’t an option. Have a bag filled with food, a first aid kit and blankets or something that can keep you warm at night. An emergency radio, batteries and a charged cell phone are also good things to have in case of an emergency. The Ready Marine Corps guide says to plan for at least 72 hours in advance. Keep extra prescriptions if at all possible.
After you have all your supplies, plan an escape route and choose a place to regroup in case something were to happen. Practice your escape route with your family so everyone knows what to do.
Disasters aren’t planned. Be familiar with the emergency or disaster plan at your workplace. If you don’t know what they are, ask and if no one knows, contact your unit’s safety representative.
Many people die in natural disasters simply because they don’t know what to do and find themselves waiting for someone to tell them what to do. Plan accordingly to stay safe in any situation.
