MCAS Beaufort Marines prepare for the upcoming summer months

    BEAUFORT, SC, UNITED STATES

Story by Lance Cpl. Benjamin McDonald

    Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort

Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort participates in the nationwide April PrepareAthon 2017. The month long campaign encourages Americans to test their readiness by taking action to improve their personal readiness and that of their community.
Each week focuses on a different topic empowering Marines, families and military personnel to have the knowledge and skills to navigate any hazard or natural disaster at home or abroad. The first week focused on flooding. According to MCAS Beaufort Mission Assurance floods are one of the most common hazards in the United States. Floods can happen over time or in a matter of minutes. Spring and summer are the season when the threat of flooding to the Beaufort area is at the greatest. In the case of a flood avoid walking or driving through floodwaters. Six inches of moving water can knock a human down and two feet of water can sweep a vehicle away.
The theme for the second week of PrepareAthon is tornados. According
to ready.gov/tornados, there have been 510 tornados in the United States. Tornados occur near the edge of powerful thunderstorms. The peak of tornado season is the spring and summer months but tornados can occur at any time. In the event of a tornado Marines should seek refuge inside a stable structure. Make sure to stay away from windows or external walls and build an emergency kit.
During the spring and summer months Marines must remain vigilant and aware of the changing weather conditions and approaching storms to their area.
The third week focuses on hurricanes. According to MCAS Beaufort Mission Assurance, the Atlantic Hurricane season starts June 1 and ends Nov. 30. 48 hours prior to when the National Weather Service predicts a hurricane will hit, it will issue a hurricane/ tropical storm watch. Within 36 hours of a hurricane/tropical storm affecting an area the NWS will issue a hurricane/ tropical storm warning. During a warning Marines should complete storm preparations and leave the area if evacuated by the commanding officer.
If Marines have any questions about the different themes of PrepareAthon
